Professor Liaw has published more than 35 reviewed papers in various areas of solid mechanics and materials engineering using both experimental and numerical techniques. His early research on ceramics was among the first to measure the crack propagation history in structural ceramics. Together with Prof. Delale, their pioneer experimental technique using a scanning electron microscope equipped with a tensile/heating stage was the first to report the in situ damage progression of ceramic matrix composites under thermomechanical loading. His joint studies with Profs Jiji and Dagan was on cooling and erosion of jet impingement of microelectronic chips. He is also the school PI at CCNY for ECSEL, an engineering coalition funded by NSF to enhance undergraduate engineering education. He also leads the coalition's effort in improving manufacturing education, which is funded by the federal Technology Reinvestment Project. With this new funding, he expects to add the facilities for composite material processing and computer aided manufacturing to his research laboratory, which is currently built around a scanning electron microscope with high-end image processing capability.
